Totti unhappy with lack of Roma success

First Published: Nov 12, 1999

AS Roma captain Francesco Totti has sparked transfer speculation after claiming he is unhappy with the recent lack of success for the giants Italian club.

The 23 year old was a target last year for Manchester United and has since become a regular in the Italian national team and was speaking at the Coverciano training camp of Dino Zoff's squad before a friendly against Belgium tomorrow night.

Roma are a massive club but Totti told reporters that he cannot see them winning anything in the next two years of his contract before talks on any renewal take place. It is a massive blow for Roma and president Franco Sensi ruled out any chance of a transfer for Totti away from the club he joined as a 12 year old. Totti was a fan as a boy and stood on the Curva Sud at the Stadio Olimpico. His emergence as one of the new stars of the Italian game has helped to ease some of the pain for Roma fans felt at the recent success of hated city rivals SS Lazio who are on course for their first Italian championship since 1974.

Totti is a symbol of the Roma club and his unhappiness is the first major setback for new coach Fabio Capello who joined the club in the summer. Capello's reign could be tainted if Totti is prised away from the capital while he is coach and Totti's consideration of a transfer to win honours does not give Capello a vote of confidence from his team captain. AS Roma's last major title was a 1991 Coppa Italia win and it is 17 years since they won the championship.
