Irish drop Turkish abuse claims

First Published: Nov 19, 1999

The Republic of Ireland Football Association has issued a statement saying that it will not protest over Wednesday night’s player trouble.

The incident which took place following the Republics 0-0 draw with Turkey saw Turkish fans fighting with Irish players and players from each team clashing, including striker Tony Cascarino who was punched first by Turkish player Ali Eren and then by a member of the crowd.

Instead of issuing an official complaint the Ireland FA have raised the matter with a UEFA official intending to leave the matter entirely in UEFA’s hands.

The Euro 2000 play-off match saw Turkey proceed to next summers championships by virtue of the away goal ruling. The first leg in Dublin finished up 1-1.
