Record World Cup entry for 2002

The draw for the 2002 World Cup is to be held on December 7th 1999 with a record number of countries involved in the contest.

191 countries will take part in the preliminary rounds, 17 up on France 98 and 75 up from Italia 90. These countries include Afghanistan, Guam, Yemon, Benin, Eritrea, Gabon, Guinea-Bissan, Niger, Sudan, Togo and Papua New Guinea.

The draw will take place in Tokyo with all team coaches and their heads of soccer federations in attendance. Matches commence on 1st March 2000 and are due to finish on 11th November 2001. The draw for the final 32 countries who will qualify for the 2002 World Cup will be held in the Republic of Korea, possibly in December 2001.
