Portugal will host the European Championships in 2004.
The decision wa smade by UEFA this afternoon after two years of campaigning. The Portuguese beat off a challenge from Spain and bookmakers' favourities Austria and Hungary who mounted a joint bid.
The tournament will be the first major championship finals to be held in the country that will now invest heavily in upgrading new stadia and infra strucutre to support their winning bid. Portugal qualified outright for the 2000 finals next summer in Belgium and Holland by finishing as the best runner up in Group Seven.
