Heskey says he is ready for Euro 2000

First Published: Feb 22, 2000

This coming week sees Leicester City player Emile Heskey taking part in what could be the biggest two games of his career. A starting place in Wednesday nights friendly against Argentina looks on the cards while he will also line up in this Sundays Worthington Cup Final against Tranmere.

"It has been a good week for me. Obviously with the two games coming up I am enjoying my football really. If I am involved on Wednesday I will be delighted; then I will go back to my club and look to Sunday."

Emile’s manager Martin O’Neil has said that he would have preferred coach Kevin Keegan not have picked the player, intent on keeping him injury free ahead of this Sundays match.

"To be honest I like to play games. I enjoy coming away with the England squad; that's what I wanted to do. If I'm picked, I am selected I want to come away. Once I finish here I will go and play with my club on Sunday again and go from there."

Compared with previous seasons Emile Heskey has not scored so many goals was this the only sticking point in his career?

" Like I said before the manager is happy with me; obviously I would love to get more goals. As long as the manager is happy with me I'm happy. Obviously I want to go out there and score goals but whether I take my chances or not I will always go out there and I want to score. It is just getting the time to do it, you know. Like I said, I always try to go out and score, but if it doesn't happen, you know what I mean, I'll go out the next week and try to do it then."

With the European Championships only four months away a good performance in Wednesday nights game could pay dividends when Keegan picks his final 22.

"Definitely. Like I said, there is a lot of rivalry for the strikers and if I go out there and perform hopefully that will put me in good stead for Euro 2000. Obviously the closer we get the - people like Robbie Fowler will be fit so I have just to go out there and try to perform."

We could well see a Heskey, Shearer partnership this Wednesday night, could Heskey see himself connecting with Shearer?

"I do not know. I have played with a lot of forwards and I have really had a bond with them, but I do not know. We have to wait and see if I play or if I get on as sub or whatever -- we have to wait and see. "I think everyone who plays football thinks they have a little bond with him, they can connect with him, you know. Like about myself I think I do as well. "You know -- he's the number striker at the minute, like I said and I see things in his game that I could take into mine you know as well. I do not want to just be his partner, I want to mould myself on him as well. He's a great striker. "He's a great forward and he never -- even though he wasn't scoring the goals that everyone loves him to score he still -- he was still performing well. I have seen some of the games he played. He was performing well and was really working hard. Now the goals are coming back he's enjoying it again and he's a lot more confident and everything and all. And he never really fell out of form really."
