Coach Lemerre adds to French Euro 2000 squad

First Published: May 22, 2000

France coach Roger Lemerre has added six names to the French squad to train for a friendly next week with Croatia in Zagreb.

The players come from Arsenal and Chelsea who have just finished their season with cup finals and will be joined at the end of this week by players from Parma, Inter and Real Madrid following the Champions League final and a play off in Serie A for the last Champions League place for next season.

The list forms the basis of the squad for Euro 2000 next month where the 1998 World Cup winners are among the favourites. France were European champions in 1984 when they hosted the finals.

Lemerre will train his players in the Alps before the trip to Croatia and says his final squad for the Euro finals will be named on May 31st - a day before UEFA's deadline.

Goalkeepers - Barthez (AS Monaco), Lama (PSG) and Ramé (Bordeaux).

Defenders - Lizarazu (Bayern Munich), Desailly (Chelsea), Leboeuf (Chelsea) and Candela (AS Roma)

Midfielders - Zidane (Juventus), Djorkaeff (Kaiserlautern), Deschamps (Chelsea), Vieira (Arsenal), Petit (Arsenal), Pires (OM) and Micoud (Bordeaux).
