French football boss Claude Simonet says national team coach Roger Lemerre will take charge of the World Cup winners until at least 2002 and the World Cup finals in Asia.
The French were pushed hard to qualify from their section for Euro 2000 but are among the favourites to win the title next month.
The 1998 World Cup winners qualify automatically for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and Lemerre had hinted in interviews at the turn of the year that the schedule of two years of friendlies after Euro 2000 was completed did not appeal. Now he has agreed a two year contract extension with Simonet and the FFF along with under-21 coach Raymond Domenech who had been a target for OM.
