Injured Vieri will miss Euro 2000

The world's most expensive striker is injured again and will miss the Euro 2000 finals for Italy.

Internazionale star Christian Vieri limped out of last night's Champions League play off win in Verona against Parma AC with a recurrence of a persistent foot injury that has helped to wreck his first season in Milan. Inter splashed out a world record £32 million to sign Italy's first choice striker from SS Lazio a year ago.

Vieri underwent a scan this morning and arrived at the Italian training camp of Coverciano outside Florence to tell team coach Dino Zoff the bad news. There is no chance that Vieri will be fit in time for inclusion in the 22 man Italy squad which has to be finalised by June 1st according to UEFA Rules.

In Milan Inter coach Marcello Lippi was dismissing rumours that Lazio and another of the striker's former clubs - Juventus - are keen to sign Vieri again after his injury problems. Lippi confirmed his intention to stay as Inter coach after the team won a place in next season's Champions League and said Vieri would be staying as well.
