Matthaeus suffers thigh injury in Euro 2000 training

First Published: May 28, 2000

Germany expect veteran sweeper Lothar Matthaeus to recover from a hamstring strain and take his place in the Euro 2000 finals squad next month.

Coach Erich Ribbeck must finalise his list of 22 players by Thursday's deadline and the 39 year old Metro Stars has been ruled out of Germany's friendlies with Mallorca next week and the Czech Republic at the weekend after the thigh muscle injury.

The former Bayern Munich star was hurt in training yesterday in Mallorca and will be deputised by Bayer Leverkusen defender Carsten Ramelow in the preparation matches. Matthaeus will be rested this week and return to training by the weekend.
