Scotland 3 Estonia 2, October 10th 1998

First Published: Oct 10, 1998

Scotland recovered to win a game that sees them stay in contention to qualify for the Finals in Belgium and Holland in summer 2000.

Billy Dodds was the saviour in a narrow win against a side that bookmakers quoted at 14-1 against before the start.

A defensive error as Jim Leighton in goal and his captain Colin Hendry contrived to fluff a clearance for a corner allowed Estonia to get a shock lead in the 38th minute. The corner was swept across on to the head of Sergei Hohav Simson and the ball looped into the net over Leighton for a shock lead goal.

The Scots have struggled for goals under coach Craig Brown and this match produced the familiar pattern as the home side strived to make the most of their advantage at Tynecastle. Estonia were able to organise themselves and keep the Scots attackers in front of the danger areas and break themselves when their possession was impressive and confident. The Scots were laboured and sad as they saw the chances of a big win recede.

Dodds hit an equaliser in the 70th minute only to see Estonia score a second on the break through Maksim Smimov. Simson slashed a ball into his own net to draw the Scots level again before Dodds intervened for the winner when he met a cross to fire in low. This ill-temepered match saw seven bookings and an Estonian sent off late on.
