New coach Erich Ribbeck's Germany - the reigning champions of Europe crashed to a 1-0 defeat in Turkey tonight.
In a seething atmosphere in Bursa geverated by a capacity 25,000 crowd Hakan Sukur maaintained his status as a national Turkish hero with a powerful shot on the run to defeat goalkeeper Oliver Khan.
The new German attack of Oliver Bierhoff and Ulf Kirsten were supported from behind by Stefan Beinlich but the side never looked like fulfilling the title of European champions inherited from former coach Berti Vogts who resigned last month.
The Turkish play was powerful and direct and their neat and accurate passing produced a similar poor display to those seen by the Germans in the recent World Cup. Their side looked disjointed and had few attacking ideas. For muuch of the game they seemed hapy with the draw until Sukur struck to force them out into the open. Their new tactics did not work and goals seem les likely than ever from the national side.
