Holland 2 Peru 0, October 10th 1998

Frank Rijkaard saw his new job start with a win against Peru on Saturday night.

The new coach must have been pleased with the first half from Holland who were playing their first match since an impressive World Cup performance during the summer.

The familiar team pattern of accurate passing and frequent width worked well in the opening stages but there were few chances to mention and no shots on target as the game gradually seemed to lose momentum.

The second half saw the goals that clinched the win for the home side but their performance after the break was half hearted at best as Peru revealed next to no ambition themselves.

Defender Jaap Stam headed in a corner and Patrick Kluivert who was quiet all night saw a goal ruled out for off side. The returning Peter Van Vossen scored the second with fifteen minutes to go with a low drive.
