Moldova 1 Germany 3, October 14th 1998

Germany went behind but managed to save themselves for a convincing win in the end.

New coach Erich Ribbeck must have been looking for the exit in Chisinau in the sixth minute when striker Alexander Guzun broke clear to hit the opening goal and revive German memories of their Saturday defeat against Turkey.

The visitors rallied though and began passing moves which established their control of midfield. Width was easier for them to find after this and an equaliser came in the 19th minute when Ulf Kirsten turned and shot in a cross.

The German control of the game strengthened after this and they pushed on for the goals that would win the match. Kirsten hit the first of these on 36 minutes and was followed two minutes later by a low strike from captain Oliver Bierhoff.
