Turkey win on away goals rule after 1-1 draw on aggregate

The away goals rule sees Turkey return to the European Championships after this blank in Bursa.

Ireland battled hard but could never claim to deserve a lead or a victory as the home side held together a poorer display than they produced on Saturday night in Dublin to earn a 1-1 draw.

The Irish have now lost three play-offs in a row to get to major finals but could have been well beaten here as Turkey slapped two shots against the frame of the goal in a tired and scrappy game. Hakan Sukur fluffed two good chances while Sergen failed to make the most of the best chance of the night when he ran clear of the defence to see his shot saved by goalkeeper Kiely.

Turkey did the hard work by avoiding defeat in Dublin and without ace striker Robbie Keane Ireland never got near the initiative in this match.
