France needed an 88th minute winner to see off the challenge of Poland in Paris.
Zinedine Zidane hit the winner from a free kick in a central position when he volleyed a rebound into the net after his original shot had been blocked.
David Trezeguet played well on his return to the starting line up and forced two point blank saves from Jerzy Dudek in the Polish goal early in the second half of this low key game but France failed to create many chances as they dominated possession.
Poland had been the dominant side of the first half and Bartosz Karwan almost scored with their best chance of the game when he drove a low shot to the goal line only to see Laurent Blanc scoop the ball clear.
