The Czech Republic won all ten of their Euro 2000 qualifiers but were defeated in Dublin by a late goal from Robbie Keane as Ireland capped a fine second half display to find a winner.
The first half ended with the score at 2-2. Jan Koller had put the Czechs ahead when he found space in the 4th minute to finish a low cross from close range.
Niall Quinn was credited with the equaliser but replays showed the last touch from Karel Rada as he challenged the Sunderland striker in the air.
Koller scored his second of the night when he was completely unmarked to head in a 35th minute cross from Karel Poborsky.
Leeds defender Ian Harte capitalised on a loose ball in the Czech area after Rada collided with goalkeeper Ladislav Maier to level the score.
Ireland should have gone in front at the start of the second half when a shot from a corner was cleared from what seemed to be a Czech defender stationed behind the line.
Keane intervened in the 87th minute to produce the win when he found space to convert a loose ball and set off some wild celebrations.
