Euro 2000 Group C - Slovenia 0 Norway 0

First Published: Jun 21, 2000

Norway were stunned by news from Spanish journalists after their 0-0 draw with Slovenia that the result was not enough to take the Scandinavians into the quarter finals.

The sterile 0-0 was enough to put the Norwegians into the next stage until two injury time goals from Spain saw them win Group C and qualify alongside opponents Yugoslavia with a 4-3 win in Bruges.

The Spanish reporters fed news of the result to the Norwegian stars as they stood on the pitch and the news left them visibly shaken.

This tedious 0-0 draw saw few chances in a second half where both teams settled for the situation but really it was up to the Norwegians to force a win and they never came close with completely negative tactics that were completely out of step with the rest of the tournament.

On 20 minutes Steffen Iversen came close with a drive Slovenia created their best chance moments later.

A Zlatko Zahovic free kick was headed over the bar by new FC Porto signing Miran Pavlin and the same player helped in the move that set up Rudonja to cross for Siljak to hit a shot wide.

Pavlin hit a drifting shot wide just before half time and then Mykland set up a free kick chance for Iversen by flicking the ball into the air for the Tottenham forward to drive a free kick wide of the target.

Norway have only themselves to blame for the disappointment at the end as they contributed little to a lack lustre second half and go out of Euro 2000 with a feeble display.
