Euro 2000 Group C - Czech Republic 2 Denmark 0

First Published: Jun 21, 2000

Two goals from Liverpool striker Vladimir Smicer saw the Czech Republic beat Denmark in Liege as Group D in Euro 2000's qualifying stage came to an end.

Both countries were eliminated from the tournament last weekend after two defeats for each side but they produced a tenacious spectacle with several suspect challenges flying in at times.

Karel Poborsky crossed from the right in the 64th minute for Smicer to finish from close range and three minutes later Newcastle United target Jan Koller rose to send Smicer clear on goal with a well timed header.

The midfielder knocked the ball around Peter Schmeichel and finished the chance well into an empty net.

Mikkel Beck headed wide from a Thomas Helveg free kick in the 14th minute and both AC Milan-bound Jesper Gronkjaer and Jon Dahl Tomasson had powerful drives turned away by Czech goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek.

Schmeichel defied Smicer's long drive in the 38th minute and Denmark are only the second team to not score at all at a European Championship finals in the competitions 40 year history.
