Czech Republic 3 Australia 1

First Published: Mar 29, 2000

The Czech Republic found an easy win against Australia in Teplice and keeps them on course for a good showing at the Euro 2000 finals in June.

The Czechs were only beaten on a golden goal in the 1996 final and won all ten of their qualifiers. The side fielded against Frank Farina's side was hurt by several injuries in the build up to this game.

The home side coped well with the disruption and took the lead in only the 9th minute.

Pavel Nedved emphasised his good start to the match by swinging a corner onto the head of midfielder Milan Fukal who guided it into the net.

In the 16th minute Jan Koller added a second with another header from a deep cross as the Czech passing game started to dominate the match.

The goal of the night came in the 67th minute when when Poborsky and Koller combined to take the ball into the middle of the Australian defence before he slipped it across to Ivo Ulich who tapped the chance into the net.

Australia only managed to score as the home side waited for the final whistle when goalkeeper Jaromir Blazek allowed defender Craig Moore to reach a cross and he sank the ball into the target. Australia gave Harry Kewell, their star player, leave to miss this game but without him to fire up their play they lack quality in attack.
