Holland 2 Romania 1

First Published: May 27, 2000

Holland completed only the third win of coach Frank Rijkaard's tenure in a low key Amsterdam friendly that did little to advance their reputation as one of the favourites for Euro 2000.

This victory over fellow Euro finalists Romania was the lost home warm up game for the Dutch before the tournament starts on June 10th.

The home side dominated the match and fluffed several close range chances to build a convincing lead. Patrick Kluivert was particularly profligate in front of the Romanian goal but he tends to perform better in actual competitive matches for club and country.

Kluivert scored the winner in fact just after the hour when he wandered away from the penalty area to receive the ball, turned and ran at the static Romanian defence. He went clear and drove the ball low into the net to make up for several easier chances in the first half that he managed to slash wide of the target.

Romanian top scorer Viorel Moldovan cashed in on loose marking to convert a Gheorghe Hagi in the 70th minute which he deflected into goal with his chest. This encouragement saw Romania commit more players forward but they failed to get another effort on target.

Marc Overmars had given the home team a deserved lead in the 43rd minute with a long range shot after cutting inside from the left on a run. At that stage of the game Holland dominated with Dennis Bergkamp's passing finding the runs of Kluivert all the time.
