Spanish striker Juan Carlos Valeron opened the scores in their tie against Russia just 36 seconds after making a 59th minute substitute appearance.

While the players were down in the changing rooms for a last minute team talk for the Spain game some of Russia's fans were making a few late adjustments of their own.

Karagounis stuns Portugal

Greek midfielder Georgios Karagounis stunned hosts Portugal when he opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the first Euro 2004 match with a long range shot.

World discovers Portugal

Euro 2004 officially got off the ground on Saturday with an opening ceremony under the theme "Portugal discovered the world. With Euro 2004 the world will now discover Portugal."
