Holland have had nightmares with penalty shoot-outs in the past, but eventually won one at the expense of Sweden in the quarter-finals. Ruud van Nistelrooy's four goals in regular play have led the 'Oranje' charge.

Greek odyssey

Greece beat defending champions France 1-0 in the second quarter-final. Greece had never before even won a tie at a finals, let alone made the semis. The success is largely credited to their German coach Otto Rehhagel.

Sol Campell saw his effort disallowed with the seconds running out for Portugal as his teammate John Terry was adjudged to have hampered 'keeper Ricardo. It was an absolute battle of a quarter-final ending 2-2 after extra time, Portugal winning 6-5 on penalties.

Going into the last day of the first phase a high scoring draw between Sweden and Denmark would see them both qualify and Italy eliminated. The match ended 2-2, sparking accusations from some Italian players.

The Czech Republic overhauled a two goal deficit against Holland to win 3-2 in what was widely regarded as the best match of the group phase.

Germany had a dreadful tournament. After a promising draw with Holland they also drew with minnows Latvia, which cost them dear later as a depleted Czech Republic side edged them 2-1. Coach Rudi Voller resigned after the first round elimination with just two years to go before they host the World Cup.

An unforgettable injury-time double from Zinedine Zidane - a free-kick and a penalty - gave France a 2-1 win over England. It was to prove the high point of a disappointing campaign for the defending champions.
