Austria took two quick ...

First Published: Jun 01, 1998

Austria took two quick goals in a seven minute spell in the first half to get through this nervous friendly in Vienna.

Although they were able to convert their two best chances of the match, Austria were nervous in defence and it was a mistake between goalkeeper Franz Wohlfahrt and central defender Heimo Pfeifenberger that allowed Tunisia back into the match when defender Khaled Badra was able to capitalise on the confusion as the Austrian pair left the ball to each other when trying to make a clearance.

By then the visitors were two down after Harald Cerny had shot in from the edge of the area to be followed by a neat finish on the run from Arnold Wetl in the 17th minute after a fine pass from Andreas Herzog who was against the pick of the Austrian midfield. His passing was neat and precise throughout and although the Tunisians chased him around they rarely had him in trouble when he was in possession.

Both sides improved defensively in the second half to extinguish the threat from two attacks that were kept off the pace of the game throughout by their unwillingness to time their runs better and try an improved finish for a change. It was all to predictable.
