Holland stumbled to a 0-0 draw with fellow qualifiers Cameroon after they missed several good chances to win this game in Arnhem.
The main frustration for the Dutch was the form of the Cameroon defence which dealt ably with the threat of Patrick Kluivert as they were organised well by Rigobert Song. Song's hard running in defence and anticipation made him the outstanding player on the pitch and his hard tackling style looks to have been adapted well for the new tackling rules. Kluivert rarely threatened as he was man marked by Beaka who was very disciplined in shutting the young star out of the match.
When the attackers were able to get chances they either missed with a wild finish or saw Jacques Song'o deal comfortably with their efforts.
In the first half Clarence Seedorf and Frank De Boer each saw efforts saved as the home side failed to impress. The only encouraging sign for the Dutch was the fast running and eager tackling of Seedorf.
Coach Guus Hiddink saw Ronald De Boer, playing in a more advanced role than usual, miss the chance of the game when he blasted a shot over the bar when put clear through.
Star striker Dennis Bergkamp is being rested at the moment after a hard season but last night the Dutch were again reminded of how much they miss him.
