Emerson moves closer to 'Boro return

First Published: May 24, 1999

Middlesbrough have made a £3 million offer to Tenerife to sign their former midfielder Emerson.

The Brazilian signed for 'Boro in 1996 but had a poor disciplinary record with the Premiership club. He took regular and sometimes unsanctioned trips back to Brazil with his girlfriend and this forced his move after only one season in England.

'Boro were attempting to bring the 27 year old back to the club in a £2 million deal in February but Tenerife were unwilling to sell. The Premiership club raised their price and the Brazilian is discussing personal terms for a return to the North East. Emerson lost his place in the Brazilian squad during his stay in England and has been out of contention since for the Brazil team.
