Old and new faces for US squad

First Published: May 24, 1999

United States soccer coach Bruce Arena has named his squad to face Argentina on June 13th in Washington.

Among the 20 man squad are several surprise inclusions the most notable being 17-year old Landon Donovan currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen and 20-year old Chris Albright.

Neither player has any full international experience although they have played at under 17 and Under 20 levels, respectively and despite their often being heralded as the future of US soccer it was thought that Bruce Arena would draft them in at a later date.

Arena has also called up Gregg Berhalter who last played for the States under ex-coach Steve Sampson three years ago and Mike Burns who was last included in the squad during the USA’s woeful France 98 World Cup campaign.

Argentina will take a full strength squad to face the US including big names like Diego Simone and Ariel Ortega. The team will be looking for match experience in preparation for this summers Copa America tournament in Paraguay.
