Boca Juniors have cashed in on one of their youth products with a deal to sell defender Walter Samuel to AS Roma for £13 million.

The transfer breaks the world record for a defender paid to PSV Eindhoven by Manchester United for Jaap Stam in a £10.5 million deal.

Boca president Mauricio Macri confirmed the transfer of Samuel to Italy in Buenos Aires in a move that will take effect on June 30th next summer - after the Libertadores Cup.

AS Roma have signed a four year contract with Samuel to run from next summer. The 21 year old made his debut for Argentina last February against Venezuela in an outstanding season for the young star whose smooth and unhurried style has seen him regarded as one of the best finds of his generation.

The transfer has been the work of Roma club president Franco Sensi who has also made a move for Vasco da Gama player Felipe.
