Taffarel quits Brazil sqaud

First Published: May 27, 1999

Brazilian goalkeeper Taffarel has quit the national side for the forthcoming friendlies against Holland next month.

Coach Vanderley Luxemburgo selected the Galatasary veteran earlier in the week and he stood a good chance of starting both matches against Holland on June 5th and 8th as Brazil prepare for the Copa America at the end of next month in Paraguay.

Taffarel telephoned Luxemburgo yesterday to say that he did not want to play for Brazil and followed his conversation up with a fax to explain his reasons which leaves Luxemburgo in difficulties with the goalkeeping position. AC Milan's Dida has only played practice matches since a move last January and Vasco da Gama first choice and former international Carlos Germano has had recent fitness problems.
