Colombia dump Higuita after cash demand

First Published: May 28, 1999

Colombia have dumped renegade goalkeeper Rene Higuita from their squad to face El Salvador in New York tomorrow and the veteran is unlikely to be included in their Copa America squad.

Higuita was recalled for the trip to the US after an eight month from the national side. He demanded a $5000 one off payment to play the game from the Colombian federation who flatly refused and removed the 32 year old from the squad announced by coach Javier Alvarez three days ago.

Striker Faustino Asprilla has confirmed that he will play in the Copa America if selected for the squad by Alvarez. The coach left out the Parma AC player from the trip to the US but Asprilla is willing to play in Paraguay at the end of next month.
