Jorge Costa offers to quit Porto

First Published: Dec 27, 2000

Porto captain Jorge Costa has threatened to quit the club as the fall-out continues from his on-the-field bust-up with team-mate Pena.

"If anyone can criticise my attitude it has to be the management of FC Porto," warned the defensive hardman, who insists he would rather step down than change his committed approach.

"If I feel they're not happy with me I won't change my way of being," he insisted. "If they think it better I go then I'll just leave because I don't want to see people annoyed."

Costa had a public falling out with striker Pena at whom he shouted during a recent match. "I'm sorry if people are a bit sensitive," said the defender. "Whoever works with me will have to be that way. If they don't want to then that's not my problem.

"I've never seen the squad as united as it has been recently. When I have to start seeing the players in a different way then my position as captain will be in doubt."
