Celtic treble secures O'Neill a place among the legends

First Published: May 26, 2001

Glasgow Celtic won their first treble since 1969 to see coach Martin O'Neill now attaining a status at the Scottish club last held by the famous Jock Stein.

O'Neill saw his side beat Hibernian 3-0 at Hampden Park to add the Scottish Cup to their earlier CIS Insurance League Cup and SPL championship.

Celtic will now concentrate on adding to their squad in the summer as they prepare for the Champins League but they must hold onto O'Neill and top scorer Henrik Larsson who hit two goals in the final to take his total for the season to 53.

Hibs froze with captain Frank Sauzee clearly not fit and speculation rising that he is to join West Ham next week.

Without his ability to add great passes to the Edinburgh club's midfield they struggled but celtic took the lead in the 39th minute with a close range finish by Jackie McNamara from a low cross.

Larsson hit a great second goal when he hit a first-time finish to a cross in the 48th minute to seal the win and he added his second with an 80th minute penalty.
