Schalke get German Cup and Union Berlin amateurs get Europe

Schalke 04 have the German Cup to take back to Gelsenkirchen but Union Berlin are to be first ever German amateur team to reach the UEFA Cup.

Schalke beat the tiny Berlin club 2-0 in yesterday's final but they lost the Bundesliga title last week to Bayern Munich by one point and have a place in the Champions League next season.

That means Union go into the other European club competition.

Union amost tok the lead in the 23rd minute when an angled shot from the corner of the penalty box by striker Harun Isa hit the far post but Schalke responded three minutes later Union goalkeeper Sven Beuckert had to punch out a good shot from Polish defender Tomasz Hajto. Schalke top scorer Ebbe Sand hit a volley over the bar in the 33rd minute but Union had the next best chance in the game.

Yugoslav striker Bozo Durkovic hit the post from the edge of the box at the start of the second half.

Joerg Boehme gave Schalke the lead with a free kick in the 54th minute and sealed the win with a penalty in the 72nd minute after a foul on Emile Mpenza.

Union were one of the biggest Berlin clubs in the od East Germany but Dinamo Berlin were the favoured side in the frmer commmunist republic and reached the Cup Winners' Cup n 1968 but boycotted the competition.
