Hagi quits Romania job

First Published: Nov 26, 2001

Romania coach Gheorghe Hagi has quit.

The former star player's agent Ioan Becali said the Romanian federation were informed of Hagi's decision in a telephone call to its chief Mircea Sandu.

"We will discuss the details of this resignation when the president of the federation returns home," Becali said with Sandu currently in South Korea..

"Hagi took this decision because the federation did not give him the assurances he needed to carry on his activity."

Sandu said Hagi would stay as Romania coach earlier this month despite the country's failure to reach the 2002 World Cup finals.

The ex-FC Barcelona and Galatasary star took charge of the team last year but Becali says Hagi made his decision to quit before a play-off defeat by Slovenia knocked them out of the World Cup finals.
