Fowler to Leeds: Inter want Kewell now

First Published: Nov 28, 2001

Internazionale are ready to offer Leeds United £20 million for Harry Kewell.

The left winger is a main target for the Milan club after Leeds successfully negotiated the purchase of England striker Robbie Fowler from Liverpool.

Australian Kewell is looking to leave Leeds next year after his failure to reach the World Cup finals with Frank Farina's national side.

A play-off defeat by Uruguay means Kewell is looking to leave the English Premiership - which Leeds lead - and move to Italy if Australia are to struggle to reach the major finals of competitions.

Leeds striker Mark Viduka has already hinted that he will not play again for Australia and has been linked with a transfer to Italy himself with AS Rome but Leeds are likely to get renewed interest from Inter in the coming weeks regarding winger Kewell.

Kewell has recently become a father and is not keen to leave England yet but if Leeds fail to win trophies this season after manager David O'Leary's £92 million outlay on new players in the last two years then the Australian could be sold.

Thee arrival of Fowler also gives Leeds cover for England international Alan Smith who faces a three game ban after being red carded for elbowing Aston Villa defender Alpay on Sunday.

Smith's disastrous disciplinary record has not been improved by O'Leary but Fowler can move alongside Mark Viduka in the Leeds attack now.
