Ajax hurry to find new coach

First Published: Nov 29, 2001

Ajax Amsterdam say they want a new coach in the next two days.

Ajax fired coach Co Adriaanse after an 86th minute winner gave them a home win over FC Twente last night.

"We want to have somebody ready for when the players turn up for training on Saturday," said Ajax managing director Arie van Eijden but he did not say that former coach Louis Van Gaal was a target for the Amsterdam club or former player Marco Van Basten.

"It would be best for Ajax to continue with a different manager. We are trying to arrange a successor as quickly as possible. We are considering a number of options but haven't reached a decision yet."

Van Eijden said that the board had unanimously voted to sack Adriaanse and said "circumstances were already beyond discussion" after the home defeat by PSV Eindhoven which prompted Monday's board meeting and the decision to fore the coach.

Danny Blind and Leo van Veen may take temporary charge at the Dutch club but former coach Louis Van Gaal left his Dutch national team job two days ago and wants to return to club football.
