Speed out for six weeks, Owen to miss Newcastle clash

Newcastle and Wales midfielder Gary Speed will be out of action for six weeks after undergoing a hernia operation.

Liverpool's Michael Owen will also be missing when his side take on Newcastle.

The England striker has not recovered from a hamstring strain incurred in the draw with Arsenal on Sunday, although he is expected to be fit to face Manchester City in the FA Cup on Sunday.

"Michael has had a scan and the results show there is nothing serious," Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier told the club's website, www.liverpoolfc.tv.

"He won't be available for Newcastle but we are hopeful for Manchester City on Sunday."

Newcastle are hoping Kieron Dyer will have shaken off a calf strain in time to face Liverpool at St James.

Liverpool will be without injured duo Emile Heskey and Dietmar Hamann and the suspended Danny Murphy.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is doubtful for Manchester United's clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford because of the toe infection which kept him out of Saturday's win over Birmingham.
