Pompey back in top flight

First Published: Apr 15, 2003

Portsmouth's 15-year wait for a return to the top flight of English football finally came to an end.

Bulgarian international Svetoslav Todorov's 20th league goal of the season was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Burnley that ensures Pompey will be playing Premiership football next season.

The party atmosphere was only slightly marred when Todorov was booked for over-celebrating his 73rd-minute strike.

But that will be quickly forgotten as Portsmouth, managed by the experienced team of Jim Smith and Harry Redknapp, contemplate the return to the big league that has been craved for so long in the port that is one of southern England's most passionate football towns.

Leicester City, who look certain to join Portsmouth in the Premiership, were made to wait for their celebrations.

Third-placed Sheffield United's 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest means Leicester are still not mathematically certain of going up, although it is surely only a matter of time before their return to the top flight is confirmed.

Sunderland are already confirmed as one of the teams dropping out of the Premiership with West Brom set to follow them down. Any one of six teams could join them although West Ham and Bolton are the two most likely to drop.
