Mighty nations take control in friendlies and Liechtenstein celebrate

First Published: Apr 30, 2003

Mighty nations France, Spain, Argentina, Germany and Italy all won friendlies though, in a setback for the former Asian champions, Saudi Arabia fell to tiny principality state Liechtenstein.

France thrashed Egypt 5-0 at the Stade de France, Spain beat Ecuador 4-0, Argentina won 3-1 in an intriguing match in Libya, Germany beat Serbia and Montenegro 1-0 and Italy had a 2-1 success in Switzerland.

However the state of Liechtenstein, tucked between Switzerland and Austria and more known for producing skiers than football, won 1-0 against Saudi Arabia in capital city Vaduz.

In other milestones, Patrick Kluivert equalled Dennis Bergkamp's record of 37 goals for Holland in their 1-1 draw against Portugal in Eindhoven. Barcelona striker Kluivert could have reached the mark much earlier had he not refused to play for the national team for some time.

The next highest scorers for the Dutch national side are Faas Wilkes (35), Abe Lenstra (33) and the legendary Johan Cruyff (33).
