Beattie condemns United to defeat

James Beattie's goal two minutes from time gave Southampton a 1-0 win over Manchester United here, the English Premiership champions suffering their first defeat of the season.

The result saw Southampton, managed by former Manchester United midfielder Gordon Strachan, record their first league win of the campaign.

Arsenal, who like United had a perfect league record before Sunday, will extend their lead at the top of the table if they win or draw away to Manchester City in a match kicking-off at 1505GMT.
