Celtic dream of Champions League goal glut

First Published: Jul 24, 2003

Scottish giants Celtic will face FBK Kaunas in the second qualifying round of the Champions League after the Lithuanian champions came through their first round encounter against Torshavn of the Faroe Islands.

Martin O'Neill's side, currently on tour in the United States, will relish the game - the last time a Lithuanian side visited Parkhead, Celtic ran riot beating Suduva 8-1 in the UEFA Cup.

Also celebrating their passage into the second qualifying round are Irish side Bohemians who defeated BATE Borisov of Belarus in Dublin overturning a 1-0 first leg deficit to win 3-0 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

Their reward is a two-legged encounter against seasoned Champions League campaigners Rosenborg of Norway.

Kaunas were already 1-0 ahead from their first leg in the Faroes and finished the job 4-1 on the night for a 5-1 aggregate win.

Ricardas Beniusis opened the scoring for the Lithuanians before Rogvi Jacobsen levelled.

But eight minutes before the interval, Kaunas were back in front through skipper Tomas Kancelskis while Martin Opic added a third and Beniusis netted again to complete the scoring.

Irish champions Bohemians booked their second-round place with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Belarus side BATE Borisov.

Stephen Caffrey, Bobby Ryan and Glen Crowe were on target for the Irishmen.

However, there was no such joy for Glentoran of Northern Ireland who lost 1-0 at Helsinki after a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg - the defeat means it is now eight years since a team from the Irish League have got beyond the qualifiers.

Welsh champions Barry Town also bowed out at the hands of FK Vardar of Macedonia despite winning 2-1 on the night.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Barry got off to a great start when defender Lee Jarman opened the scoring after just a minute.

But as the Welshmen pressed in the second half, they were caught on the break and Vardar levelled after an hour through Rogerio Oliveira.

Jamie Moralee then made it 2-1 just three minutes later but they were unable to score again and missed out on a chance to face Russian giants CSKA Moscow in the second round.
