Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon was expected in Paris to clinch a deal with Paris St Germain for their Brazil World Cup forward Ronaldinho.
The Le Parisien daily said Kenyon would meet PSG president Francis Graille Monday to put a 24 million dollar (15 million pound) bid on the table.
Graille met the 23-year-old Brazilian's agent Roberto Assis on Sunday and expects the move to be concluded by the end of the week.
Assis held talks with Kenyon last Friday and emerged confident of a deal being struck.
World Cup winner Ronaldinho, best known for fooling England goalkeeper David Seaman with a 40 metre free-kick in last year's World Cup quarter-finals, has a contract with the French club until 2006.
PSG's new coach Vahid Halilhodzic is keen to hang on to the flashy forward but the club's precarious financial position should force their hand.
French football authorities monitor clubs' finances and PSG has been called to meet the league's financial watchdog on Wednesday to prove they have the funds to buy players on the transfer market.
The only sticking point might be a deal struck by a French company called Sportfive which bought Ronaldinho's image rights when he moved from Gremio Porto Alegre to PSG for 6.5 millions dollars two years ago.
Sportfive were believed to be asking 20 million dollars for the rights.
Cameroon star Eric Djemba Djemba is also hoping to clinch a six million dollar (3.5 million pound) move to Old Trafford.
The hard-tackling Nantes midfielder is seen by United manager Alex Ferguson as a long-term replacement for Roy Keane and talks are at an advanced stage.
The clubs have agreed the fee and Djemba Djemba is hopeful he will be able to agree a contract quickly.
"It will be a dream for me when the deal is done," the 22-year-old said.
"I believe I can become a first-team starter with United. I am young and I want to prove to everyone that I can do it."
