Newcastle join Spurs in chase for West Ham's Kanoute

English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur may be pipped by Newcastle for West Ham's French striker Fredi Kanoute after Spurs put in a bid which fell two million pounds (3 million dollars) short of what West Ham want.

Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle paid 6.25 million pounds (10.4 million dollars) for 20-year-old Portuguese striker Helder Postiga from UEFA Cup winners Porto last week and has been told by his club he cannot go higher than three million pounds (5 million dollars) for the French striker.

West Ham have put a 5 million pound (8 million dollar) price tag on Kanoute.

Newcastle are keen to offer Carl Cort to West Ham in exchange.

Cort has had an injury-plagued Newcastle career since a seven million pound (11.5 million dollar) move from Wimbledon three years ago.
