Monaco chief Campora quits

First Published: Jun 30, 2003

French glamour club Monaco, who are struggling with huge debts, were rocked again when Jean-Louis Campora quit as club president after 27 years at the helm.

He will be replaced by 46-year-old Pierre Svara who helped Campora to win the team's appeal against being relegated to the second division because of their crippling 53-million-euro debt.

Campora, 64, had been president of Monaco since 1976-1977, but had been under fire ever since the club was relegated on May 28.

The decision was overturned in June 19.

Under Campora's leadership Monaco won the title five times, three French Cups and one League Cup.

They also reached the 1992 Cup Winners Cup final where they lost to German side Werder Bremen and were twice Champions League semi-finalists.
