Bertie wants Scots to be on song

Scotland manager Bertie Vogts has told his players to sing for their supper if they want to taste success.

The German said he has insisted that they all belt out the national anthem "Flower of Scotland" at internationals starting with the crucial game against Iceland at Hampden Park Saturday.

Vogts admitted that he had been concerned before last month's home friendly with the Republic of Ireland that his players might not perform because not all were singing enthusiastically before kick-off.

That was borne out by a limp performance in the 2-0 defeat and the German was keen to see his players launch into song in a patriotic manner.

"They are playing for Scotland so they have to sing the anthem," Vogts said.

"Scotland is a very small nation and we have to stay all together.

"When I was manager of Germany I didn't have to tell my players to sing it. The Germans always do that anyway."

Other changes for the Iceland game include getting to the ground earlier, with the players stepping into the home dressing room an hour and 45 minutes before kick-off.

"Normally it is 60 or 70 minutes but maybe Scottish players need more preparation mentally, and so they can go out on to the pitch earlier," said Vogts.

Meanwhile, Vogts has revealed he has sought advice from Blackburn manager and former Scotland captain Graeme Souness.

"I have phoned him a lot of times. He is a good guy for Scotland. He is always very helpful," Vogts said.
