Troubled Bosnich not out of my plans: Aussie coach

First Published: Oct 30, 2003

Mark Bosnich could still make a playing comeback for Australia if only he sorted out his stormy private life, national coach Frank Farina revealed.

Farina's supportive words come after news the troubled former Chelsea and Australia goalkeeper was arrested and released on police bail after an alleged attack on his ex-girlfriend, Sophie Anderton in London on Tuesday.

Bosnich was arrested and questioned by police following a row at his flat which led to Anderton seeking hospital treatment for bruising.

A police spokesman confirmed that a 31-year-old man had been arrested in connection with an alleged assault and that a 26-year-old woman had been treated in a nearby hospital then discharged.

Bosnich, who was taken to Notting Hill police station and bailed to return on December 4, was arrested 90 minutes after police were first called to the flat, having apparently fled the scene.

"He definitely has an opportunity to kick on with his career," Farina said.

"Thirty or 31 is still very young for a goalkeeper. He is a genuinely good lad, and I hope he sorts himself out.

"He's going through a very difficult stage of his life - it's sad.

"He has got to focus on what's important."

Farina said Bosnich could still make a comeback - but there were "other issues to sort out first".

The former star was treated for depression last year after being suspended from Chelsea after testing positive for cocaine.

He was subsequently sacked by the club after losing an appeal against a nine-month ban, during which he claimed his drink had been spiked with cocaine.

Bosnich's ban from playing football expired in September but the goalkeeper once regarded as one of the best in the English Premier League has been unable to resurrect his career.
