Santa hands 10-man Bayern an unexpected present of a point

German champions Bayern Munich fought back from being a man down and a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw with Belgian outfit Anderlecht in their Champions League Group A clash.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld's inspired double substitution bringing on Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz and Hasan Salihamidzic saw the latter set up the former to grab the equaliser in the 74th minute.

Earlier Croat striker Ivica Mornar had looked set to prevent Anderlecht's winless streak in the group stages rising to eight matches - dating back to victory over Real Madrid two years ago - when he struck home in the 53rd minute as the Belgians took advantage of Claudio Pizarro's sending-off in the first-half.

Mornar struck after superb work by Dindane Aruna, who slipped the ball past Robert Kovacs on the by-line and, instead of going for glory himself, the Ivory Coast forward saw Kahn advancing on him and slipped it back to Mornar - the 29-year-old made no mistake from six yards out.

The goal prompted Hitzfeld to send on an extra striker in Santa Cruz but it was the Belgians who had the best chances to extend their lead.

Skipper Walter Baseggio, who had taken over the captain's armband from the dropped Glen De Boeck, let fly with a rasping freekick, for a foul perpetrated by Michael Ballack on the slippery Aruna, which was well held by Kahn.

However it was to be Bayern who had the ball in the net as Roque Cruz's powerful farpost header from Salihamdzic's brilliant right wing cross beat the Anderlecht keeper Daniel Zitka easily.

An even first-half saw both sides play some nice buildup football but neither side was able to get much on target.

Bayern's Brazilian Ze Roberto wasted the best chance when he was played in well by Ballack but fired high and wide when he had more time to collect himself.

However the balance of the game changed completely when Pizarro was sent-off in the 36th minute for his second yellow card inside a minute after elbowing Finnish defender Hannu Tihinen.

The Peruvian strode past an impassive Hitzfeld and down the tunnel but his fellow South American Santa Cruz was to restore the continent's and Bayern's pride in the end.
