Celtic were engaged in negotiations with Blackburn striker Dwight Yorke aimed at bringing the Trinidad and Tobago international to Parkhead.
Celtic are still looking for a striker to fill Henrik Larsson's boots and Yorke would bring extensive experience of European football.
Any deal had to be concluded by midnight on Tuesday for Yorke, 32, to be able to play for the Scottish champions in this season's Champions League.
The former Manchester United striker has had a series of bust-ups with Blackburn boss Graeme Souness.
