Former German national coach Rudi Voller will take the reins at Roma for one year with a salary of 2.7 million euros (3.3 million dollars), the first-division Italian club said.

Voller takes over from Cesare Prandelli, who has resigned to be able to spend more time with his wife, who is suffering from a serious illness. His assistant will be Ezio Sella.

The 44-year-old arrived in Rome Tuesday morning saying he was ready to start coaching immediately and that afternoon directed his first training session.

The 1990 World Cup winning international played for Roma between 1987 to 1992. Voller resigned as German national coach earlier this year after his team's poor performance at Euro 2004 in Portugal.
