Middlesbrough coach Steve McClaren ruled himself out of replacing sacked Newcastle manager Bobby Robson.
McClaren, who was seen as a main contender for the job, said he was not interested in leaving the Riverside Stadium.
"Naturally I'm flattered that my name has been linked with such a job, but I'm very happy at Middlesbrough and am not interested in leaving the club," he said.
"We are building something exciting at Middlesbrough and I'm committed to seeing that through."
McClaren, along with Magpies skipper Alan Shearer, Birmingham boss Steve Bruce, Bolton's Sam Allardyce and former Liverpool supremo Gerard Houllier, were catapulted to the top of the betting on Monday as United chairman Freddy Shepherd launched his search for a new manager.
