Stuttgart's former coach Joachim Loew was named as new German manager Jurgen Klinsmann's assistant.

With Klinsmann in his first coaching post Loew brings some much needed experience to the task of reviving Germany's fortunes in time for the 2006 World Cup on home soil.

He was selected over a list of candidates including former Hannover manager Ralf Rangnick and Bayer Leverkusen's ex sporting director Jurgen Kohler.

Loew's appointment comes 24 hours after Oliver Bierhoff was named as Klinsmann's sports director.

This trio replace Rudi Voller, who stepped down after Germany were bounced out of Euro 2004 in the first round.
